With the National Football League season winding down, and the college bowl season underway, it is important for both older players and new players to understand the sports betting rules that apply to wagering on football. While some sportsbooks do offer lines with straight-up bets on both favorites and underdogs, the more popular way to bet on football is to bet the spread, which is the number assigned to the game in order to balance the difference in probability of winning between the two sides. As an example, the New England Patriots are a much stronger team that the Cleveland Browns, so the spread in that game could be 12 points. According to this number, the Patriots have to win by 12 in order to cover the spread and be considered a winner, while the Browns simply have to keep the final result within 12 points to be considered a winner according to the pay head bookies. As well as betting on the two teams, players can also wager on the total number, by picking whether or not the total points scored in the game will be more or less than the number assigned. If the total number for that Patriots-Browns game is 48, then any combined score less than that number would be considered an “under” result, and anything higher would be considered an “over”. Players can also bet on these games based on quarters, as well as halves, with a similar strategy based on an NFL or college part of the game rather than the entire 60 minutes. |
