After being drafted in the sixth round of the 1995 draft, Kaberle has been one of the most loyal soldiers in NHL history. However after a brutal 29 th place finish in which the team missed playoffs for a record fifth straight time, it appears Kaberle's days are numbered as a Leaf. For the past two seasons ever since former captain Mats Sundin left the organization, Kaberle has been the best player for the original six franchises. As result, he has become their best trading chip, and after the team traded its first round draft pick in this year's draft when they acquired Boston sniper Phil Kessel, Leafs general manager Brian Burke has made it clear that the starting price for Kaberle will be a first round pick in this year's draft. The Leafs who have not made the playoffs since the 2003-2004 NHL season, only have Kaberle remaining from that era. When Kaberle is traded, first round pick in the 2008 draft Luke Schenn, along with John Mitchell, and Nikolai Kulemin, will be the longest serving roster players on the Maple Leafs. Such a storied franchise has not been this young since the middle of the 1980s where they had an equally difficult time. Leafs general manager Brian Burke needs to pull a few strings, or he will be get knocked around like a UFC 116 Betting Fighter by the Toronto Fans. Burke may be able to recoup not only a first round draft pick in this year's draft, but perhaps a skilled roster player as well. NHL fans betting on Kaberle to be traded for a top five pick, should feel confident that a team such as the New York Islanders or Columbus Blue Jackets may have the best package for the Leafs to acquire such a draft pick. |
